Ibera Wetlands comprising swamps, lakes, and numerous streams and rivers, the site is a haven for birds, particularly for those favouring wetland. Located in the Argentinean province of Corrientes, a combination of boats, vehicles and walkways allow for intimate access of many species that would be difficult to encounter in other parts of the region.
Locally called "Esteros del Ibera" is one of the most important protected wetlands in South America, with 15,000 Km2 (almost 4 million acres) as Provincial Park and 10% as National Park
A long list of birds include the Strange-tailed Tyrant, Green-and-red Macaw, Crimson-crested Woodpecker, Azara´s (Least) Bittern, Crested Doradito, Black-capped Donacobius and the majestic Jabiru Stork, among a list of 500 bird species.
In addition to the birds, part of the huge area became a National Park in 2017, allowing for the reintroduction and continued conservation of many of South Ameirca’s most emblematic species of mammals, including the Jaguar, Giant Anteater and Maned Wolf.
For a protected area so rich in biodiversity, and yet so unspoiled by tourism, Ibera is an essential birding destination.
